So I read this article by Jason Korbus on examiner.com - asking about the effects modern day paranormal investigation tv has on peoples perceptions of the paranormal.
Do shows like Most Haunted, Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunt (a NZ made series here) etc - make people fear or understand the paranormal more?
My personal opinion is a little varied; I think it does both. I think the number of programmes and saturation on tv can bore people and turn them away from an interest and understanding for a start. But then again - such an accessible media brings the paranormal to many people who would have never had access to it before.
But I also think that paranormal investigative tv - when done properly could be fantastic; unfortunately I havent heard of or seen a series done this way yet. And thats mostly because of the media - tv. In general, sensationalised tv attracts more viewers. Therefore, people investigating haunted places in the dark, getting scared and screaming and running away might be good for ratings, but certainly not for credibility.
Also everyone should hopefully reaslise that tv can be and usually is, edited - for time, excitement, promotion etc purposes. For one hours programme there's probably been at least 5 hours taping - and anyone who's been out paranormal investigating knows that its 90% boredom 10% possible interesting results. So it must leave at least some of the viewers wondering just how much honest believeable material has been left in the show.
What else could I have missed? Are there other ways tv series and programmes influence the 'true' paranormal investigation? How can we get around the potential problems caused?

Does modern day 'paranormal tv' do more harm than good?

What harm they have done is long past. It was initally interesting, then obcessive, now it is way out of control and anyone who claims to be a "paranormal investigator" will have to deal with all the "bad press" all the "reality based" paranormal tv shows have engendered. I suggest making it mandatory to be licensed before one can even advertise themselves as any type of of an "investigator of paranormal happenings".

I agree its at the point where it needs regulating in some form, I also believe that the 'psychic industry' also needs some formed of regulating body. But how to do it would be a hard thing to figure out and monitor.

Well - one good spin off about making people more aware may be to bring some answers or confidence to people who are experiencing things they can explain but dont know where they should turn for help or support. Thats always a good thing.
