EmailWhite House Ghosts
The elections are coming up shortly, which means a new President will move into the White House soon. According to legends, some Presidents never even moved out. The White House is the most famous house in America, and it’s also reported to be one of the most *haunted* houses in America. Tales of White House ghosts have become very famous over the years.
Abraham Lincoln, for instance, who is considered by many to be the greatest US President, is still believed to live in the White House. Many guests over the years have reported seeing Abraham Lincoln in his bedroom and the Oval Office. Queen Wilhelmina, from the Netherlands, once stayed as a White House guest. She claimed that she heard a knock at her door one night, and when she went to answer it, Abraham Lincoln himself stood at the doorway.
Former First Lady Grace Coolidge also claims to have seen President Lincoln looking out of a window in the Oval Office. He appeared to be standing with his hands held behind his back, as if he was in “deep thought” about something. Could he still have been thinking about important issues after all those years?
Even Presidents have reportedly seen Mr. Lincoln through the years. Harry Truman and his daughter Margaret allegedly saw him on various occasions. Both claimed that Mr. Lincoln would “pay them nightly visits”, usually around 3:00 am, by knocking on their doors. President Nixon allegedly once cursed at the former President, telling him to “quit messing up the damn recording devices!”
The former butler of President John F. Kennedy, Tobias Johnson, apparently had encounters with Mr. Lincoln. He claimed that Mr. Lincoln was “polite and curious,” and even “tapped on his [Johnson’s] shoulder” to get attention.
Winston Churchill reportedly refused to sleep in President Lincoln’s former bedroom. According the story, Churchill got out of the bathtub, and before he could put clothes on, he ran straight into Mr. Lincoln himself. The witty Churchill reportedly said, “Good evening, Mr. President. You seem to have me at a disadvantage.” The former President then “smiled” before vanishing.
While Abe Lincoln is apparently the most famous ghost to walk the White House, other Presidents have made ghostly apparitions over the years as well. Andrew Jackson has been seen a few times, as well as
John Tyler, Andrew Johnson, Benjamin Harrison, and John Adams.
The ghost of Abigail Adams has been seen on occasion, as well as other First Ladies, including: Dolly Madison, Edith Wilson, and Frances Folsom Cleveland. The ladies’ ghosts have seen as well as heard over the centuries.
Considering the number of families, staff, and guests that have been inside the White House before, it’s no wonder that such a large number of hauntings have taken place there. Apparently, many Presidents, First Ladies, staff, and visitors enjoyed staying in the White House so much that they never want to leave.
