Salem Hauntings — Joshua Ward House

The Salem “witch” hunts was a horrible time in US history, so it should go without saying that Salem, Mass. is now home to many ghosts.  One such haunted place in Salem is the Joshua Ward house.  Joshua Ward was a successful sea captain, and his house was built on the foundation of  George Corwin’s home.  George Corwin was the High Sherrif during the time of the infamous witch trials.  For many years his remains were buried in the basement of the old house, and they were eventually moved to a cemetery after the Joshua Ward house was built.

Although his remains has been moved to Broad Street Cemetery, some believe George Corwin’s ghost haunts the Joshua Ward House.  Many strange things have reportedly happened in the house, including objects being misplaced, candles being “twisted” into “S” shapes, and the security alarm repeatedly going off by itself dozens of times.

There have also been reports of a woman haunting the 2nd floor.  A real estate agent once even discovered an image of a “ghostly woman” in one of her pictures.  The ghostly woman in the image is dressed in an old-fashioned black dress and has tangled black hair.  Assuming that this picture is not a hoax, could it be one of the women that the High Sheriff condemned to death for being a “witch”?

Perhaps it was one of the accused “witches”, a man named Giles Cory, that cursed High Sheriff George Corwin to death.  The High Sheriff accused Giles Cory of being a witch, and had him stoned.  Before the man died of his wounds, he allegedly “cursed” the High Sheriff. George Corwin did indeed die 5 years later of causes that were “unknown” at the time, although today it’s believed he died of a heart attack.  Many sheriffs since him have had misfortune befall them as well. Giles Cory’s ghost has also been seen during times of tragedy in Salem.  His brutal death has apparently tied him to the land forever.
