The Cass County Courthouse was built in 1897. It is a three-story brick building with an unexplained happening until now. It is said that an old janitor named John still walks the halls of the courthouse. The Courthouse also has a bell tower that adds an additional two stories. In 2004, the town constructed a new courthouse somewhere else, but still has some county offices remaining in the old courthouse.

Two confirmed executions took place in the courthouse. The first is a man that was hanged for murder. The hanging occurred on the lawn of the courthouse. The other execution was a man who had killed his wife and two children in 1891. After fleeing the county, the man met and married another woman and had a son with her. In 1987 when the son was two years old, the man killed and buried his son.

The second wife soon started looking for the husband who had left her and her dead son. This alerted Cass County officials who went to Oregon and found the man who was brought back to the present courthouse in 1899. Here he was executed.

There are many unexplained occurrences happening in the courthouse. One woman who was working for the janitorial system reported that she was cleaning the basement bathroom when something unknown slapped her in the butt. As she turned around to see who had done it, there was nobody there. This unexplained phenomenon has happened to other women using the downstairs women's bathroom as well.  Another occurrence that happened in the basement of the courthouse was in the maintenance office.

An employee reported the office door opening and closing and opening and closing. There was no one around, but this continued for over a half hour. The female employee acknowledged that there are to somebody there and told whomever to stop playing with the door and that was the end of it.

The same employee that had the door incident also reported walking up to the bell tower where it felt as if somebody had pushed her to her knees. There was no explanation as to what force her down on her knees. The woman reported feeling very dizzy and felt like she was going to pass out.

Another courthouse employee has reported hearing footsteps in the hall when working late at night. While a daughter of another office employee said she would hear a typewriter going when there was no on else there.  As she checked out the room where she heard the typewriter going, she would find no one there, but on the paper was the letter "R" repeatedly typed.
